Project Description

A large waterfall tumbles down beside a steep rock wall in the Nantahala Gorge up in the Great Smoky Mountains of the Southern Appalachia. This part of the gorge is steep and remote with many sizable cascades and smaller waterfalls up and down the river. During high water times, the river can be run just downstream from here by experienced white-water kayakers. The gorge is also popular with fly-fishermen. I have been to this area several times now in most weather and water conditions including the dead of winter when icicles hang from rocks and logs and thick frost coats the sleeping vegetation in sheets of textured wonder.
